Good discussion. :) Although I’ve personally found using swipes to be ineffective and dangerious if other CCed mobs are around. Using a lacerate and mangle rotation seems to work much better especially on heroics where DPS is top notch.

Yay Epic Dolls!

Hi All!
Great podcast, i loved it :-) . I wanted to add that a nifty addition to the balance tree is insect swarm with its chance to hit reduced by 2% for only 50 mana (rank 1) can be a great thing for a tank, especially if they don’t have rage generation issues :-) . Again, great work.

Just to clarify the leveling issue, imo the only reason you level as feral (same as a shaman leveling as enhacement) is gear / itemization.

you don’t really get any healing or caster gear before level 55ish, and it only gets better now with Burning crusade gear. And because of that you would be “wasting time” with all the downtime caused by mana starvation or even lower dps, and you would definitely feel gimped playing the other specs in comparison to feral at that point time.

And yes, I play a feral druid since vanilla wow :)

As a feral I have some things to add and to rectify here.

Mangle as a 51-pointer is _the_ aggro ability for a bearform druid. The added dmg from shred and bleeds is a nice extra for the rest of your raid.
For cat-druids it’s not a nice dps boost; I think only about 10% of my damage is done by mangle. Mangle is there for the debuff: your most important dmg spells are shred and rip as a finisher. This will make a typical castcycle of mangle, shred to 5 combo points, rip, repeat.
WWS supports this, for any feral I’d say. A personal WWS report

Secondly, Bears do not have Block, nor Parry. We rely on dodge, yes. But I would say our most important tanking stat is armor first off. (That is, until you hit the cap of 34k)
Since we can not block or parry, and cannot lower the dmg input due to blockvalue, we need another way to lower damage in. The 400% extra armor Dire Bear Form gives will get you much higher armor values than a warrior or paladin, allowing us to ‘soak’ more dmg seeing as the damage will be far lower. We will get less spikes than a warrior or paladin as well due to this. (especially when a pala or warr loses his holy shield / shield block)
However, we can not push crushings off the table. Warriors and Paladins can do this due to being able to get higher total avoidance. (the added values of block, parry and dodge)

It was also said that druids are very gear-dependent. I would like to argue this; yes, as said in your podcast, we do need to switch our gearsets to tank or dps. (I really wouldn’t dare tank MH in my catset, and I do about 00 dps in my beargear max ;) )
However, this is not gear-dependency in my opinion. Stats are spread very thin for a druid, we only have to focus on a few stats for any set. Armor, HP and dodge as a bear, and AP + crit as a cat. (our hit-cap is very low seeing as we attack with a ’1handed weapon’)
This means you do not have to look far for gear that would be good; stats are always better than ratings (due to the SotF talent) and anything that ups one of the 3 stats mentioned above is good.
There is of course always a ‘dependency’ which simply means you have to look for stats that will benefit your class, but where rogues have to spread their stats over hit, crit, ap and haste rating or warriors have to spread over armor, stamina, block parry and dodge we can much more directly aim for agility (crit, ap, armor) and some armor / str (the former for bear, the latter for cat)
Furthermore, druid gear is itemized in such a way that ferals can actually gear up fast at a low itemlevel, and stay a proper tank up until a fairly high itemlevel. A personal example; I’ve been wearing my (blue quality!) Heavy Clefthoof pants until far in SSC (nothing better dropped for me) and it was no problem.
I agree that there is too little leather with defense rating on it, tho because we only use defense to get crit immune, we can solve this problem with a few pvp pieces. Resillience is a faster way to get crit immune than defense, anyway.
There could be more _true_ feral gear out there tho with a bit better distribution of statpoints, so we don’t have to go for rogue gear or pvp gear, but other than that we’re pretty much set.

Lastly I would like to point out that Improved Leader of the Pack, apart from being a nice offheal to the melee group, is very nice for a tanking bear too. We can still not use potions in our feralforms (trees can, moonkins can, but bears and cats don’t have opposable thumbs ;) ) so the LotP healing counts as our ‘potion’. Fully buffed every 6 seconds a crit will give me around 1k healing, making for a slow but steady self-healing, like a warrior chain-chugging potions every 2 minutes to lessen the strain on the healers.

And I still don’t know why OoC is a resto-talent either, but I don’t mind. It makes for a good 0/46/14 build. Ferals ‘need’ the Naturalist, Furor and either Natural Shapeshifter or Intensity too (depending on wether you’re a ‘true MT’, or more of a hybrid feral)

I had fun listening to the podcast, it was a good basic breakdown of the druid class. These were just basics tho, I’m sorry to say, and as a fulltime-feral I did have to set these little things straight ;) Sorry for nit-picking, and I hope you still believe me when I say I’m looking forward to the next podcast.

A little bit of extra info for credibility: http://armory.wow-europe.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Bloodhoof&n=Shey my armory page
I am a catformdruid in our raids, my guild raids MH and BT. This means I am a dpser first, and an MT (not OT!) second.

I hope my addition was of any use / a nice read ;)

The druid that solo’d Onyxia was a restoration druid, tho she tweaked her spec (and gear) to be moonkin / resto oriented (not a DS HT build tho) so she could put out enough dps while being able to heal herself.

No problem Shey. Thanks for sharing the info!
