Two Dogs travel through gaming culture/cultures.

Me and Leala have two dogs, Bettie (named after the late Bettie Page) and Roy (a rescue from a next door neighbor.)

Here they are:

Both are beautiful rescues. Bettie is some kind of mix of Whippet, and Roy is definitely Aussie. He herds me and the wife, the dogs at the dog park, and the cats (if they would stop running he would stop chasing.)He also has one ear that always flops over, which makes me go “HOLY CRAP THAT’S CUTE!” every day.

I am going to take them through different “cultures” to see how they would fit in.

I am going to define “culture” as: something that a group of people do, to look the same, act the same, and sometimes TALK the same as the other members of the culture. The idea here is to NOT stick out.

Thug Culture:

This is an obvious one. They would choose Bettie, being that a short haired dawg is closer to a Pit Bull than a long haired dogg.

4 Spellborn screenies from last night’s adventure…

I had so much fun last night in The Chronicles of Spellborn!

At first, I was worried that the game would not take itself seriously enough. Then, I went to the first solo instance, after climbing a huge HUGE HUGE mountain.

This is going to be a great game for roleplay/Immersion Project style gaming. More to come on next week’s podcast!

Why raiding is ruining (or will ruin) this game and many others…possibly the truth.

(This was tongue in cheek GAWL mom.)

For the sake of argument, I will allow that the definition of raiding to be: “Something that the top percent of players do, in a group, in a ‘dungeon.’” Instead of the definition being: “Several players getting together, killing things and doing a few tricks…many many many many times.”

The Love/Hate of Raiding

Anyone who knows me knows that I have very mixed feelings about raiding in WoW. Raiding is one of those divisive topics that almost everyone has some sort of strong opinion about. Love it or hate it, the social and cultural issues that raiding creates within MMORPGs is undeniable. It’s kind of amazing how a somewhat simple game mechanic can create an entire world around itself. A world shrouded in mystique, covered with excitement and super drama sauce on the side.

The Epic Cartel’s first kill of the final boss in Kara. It was a good night.

My personal experience with raiding is actually fairly limited, on purpose. When I started WoW, just like anyone else, I didn’t even know what raiding was. But as you go along in the game, you hear tales of guilds going on these grand adventures in places like Molten Core at the time. It seemed like so much work and that it required a knowledge and dedication that was just beyond me. So for my first 3 years or so of WoW, it was just something I didn’t think I wanted to do. With BC, things changed a bit and it became easier for smaller guilds and more people to get involved. But still, for me, it was out of the question. Until summer ’07 when I decided to take the leap and support my guild in making an attempt at 10-person raiding. We got off to a rough start but with some help ended up having a few months of success in Karazhan and are now working toward rebuilding our team and getting back to it at 80. Some of my most exciting and memorable times in WoW have been because we took that leap. But, as with anything in life, all is not shiny and roses and I would describe my feelings toward raiding now as a love/hate relationship at best.
